The fishing town of Puerto Morelos is a popular place for snorkelers and scuba divers to begin their travel to the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park (Parque Nacional Arrecife de Puerto Morelos). This protected National Marine Park is part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest reef system in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The reef is only 550 yards offshore, the closest point along the coast of Quintana Roo, and its protected status allows for a great opportunity to view a fantastic display of marine life.
